Freelance Illustrator / Designer / Cartoonist

November 2003 to Present

I have done magazine illustrations for Stuff, Money, Wired, and have been a regular contributor to Make: from 2009 to the present. I have created editorial illustrations for the Seattle Stranger, and the Portland Mercury, and have done illustrations for other high profile clients including Planet Hollywood, Verizon, and Hewlitt-Packard. Had a cartoon strip, Bucky, syndicated in the Portland Mercury from October 2005 to December 2006 and contributed comics to Wino Magazine and the Seattle Stranger. Designed brochures, newsletters, logos and other business materials for local businesses and have done conceptual artwork for a book on colonizing the moon. Have also done book illustrations for Chicago Review Press and the Microsoft Patterns and Practices Group.

Interactive Developer / Designer / Illustrator – Kinetic Books

October 2006 to October 2009

Created interactive activities/mini-games for a computer based dynamic Algebra textbook converting design sketches to vector artwork and finally into animated Flash art resources and interactive Flash UIs . Programmed using Actionscript 2.0 and 3.0 and imported data using both XML and custom data feeds. Designed and developed a complex demo shell for showing the company’s products on their website and did all of the production work for the Algebra product demo.

Character Designer – Filter (sub-contract for MSPress)

April 2003 to October 2003

Designed, developed, and refined characters for use in a grades 3 to 12 academic computer literacy textbook series. Designed robots, mechs, mobile suits, vehicles and characters. Gained experience developing characters/vehicles from sketches to professionally textured, fully articulated 3D models using 3DS Max.

Senior Electronic Artist – Microsoft Press

March 1999 - April 2003

Created design standardized technical illustrations for over 50 Microsoft Press titles. Created editorial illustrations that visually expressed the abstract content of the book. Dealt extensively with prepress issues for 1 color, 2 color, and 4 color books including trapping, overprinting, font issues, generating and trouble-shooting postscript from Acrobat, Pagemaker, FrameMaker, Freehand, and Illustrator, and troubleshooting any and all graphics problems. Automated common repetitive production tasks using Freehand 8 scripting, PageMaker scripting and Microsoft Visual Test. Created custom applications using Visual Basic with OLE automation and the Illustrator Type Library.
